MTV PUSH has named Tennessee-raised rapper GloRilla as the featured Global PUSH Artist for the month of September. In 2021, GloRilla committed to pursuing her music full time and in just 2022, the rising rapper went viral when her single “FNF (Let’s Go)” exploded onto the scene. Following the success of the track, she was signed by Memphis legend Yo Gotti to his own Collective Music Group imprint, and released her 2x Platinum single “Tomorrow 2” featuring Cardi B, which debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard’s Hot 100. The artist also launched her debut EP, “Anyways, Life’s Great…” (CMG/Interscope Records) last year, becoming the biggest label debut EP from a female rapper in three years. With her hard-earned nominations at the American Music Awards, The Grammys, and for “Breakthrough Artist” at the 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards, as well as performances at numerous renowned music festivals, the Memphis superstar is ready to take over the world. Join MTV this month as they sit down with GloRilla to learn more about growing up in Tennessee, how she first fell in love with performing, and how she overcomes writer’s block.
On growing up in Memphis, Tennessee:
“Growing up when I was a little child in school, I always wanted to be an actress, like I loved Meagan Good, Taraji [P. Henson], Lauren London…. I was homeschooled, and when I got into school, I was quiet at first. By the time I got to sixth grade I was outspoken, like I had like I came out of my shell and ever since then, I was always an outspoken child.”
On her first performance:
“My first performance was at a talent show in Memphis… My cousin was with me, it was the talent show, and I was so scared. But then I just got up there and I just performed, and it just, it felt natural. I was just hype. And I was like if you’re going to do it, you got to go out there and do it, and I did it.”
On how she writes her lyrics:
“Today, I really like to record, like how I used to before I blew up. When I go into the studio, and I listen to beats, it be cool, but it’s like for some reason I get writer’s block and I can’t think so I write better when I listen to the beats, when I’m just sitting on the balcony or riding around in a car. I listen to the beats and the lyrics come to me faster.”
On her excitement being featured as an MTV PUSH artist:
“It’s an honor working with MTV and being selected as September’s PUSH artist. The MTV family has been an important part to my success. From appearing on “FRESH OUT,” being nominated for my first VMA, and now being selected as a PUSH artist.”
What can viewers expect to learn about GloRilla through MTV PUSH, that they might not know:
“The GloRidaz can expect to learn a little bit more about me. I want to keep opening to my fans and make them feel like they are always part of my journey.”
