“The song is about a criminal who is convicted of stealing someone’s love. It portrays an endless and unexpected love, which never ceases, and symbolises what it feels like to be in love. It’s almost like the story of ‘Bonnie and Clyde’… a love as strong as theirs,” Mia explains about the meaning behind her first official radio single, which has just been released.
Although this singer – with her pure voice – has been in the music industry for thirteen years and has already been on The Voice SA, it is her first original song to be released to the radio and it was definitely worth the wait!
KRIMINEEL was written by Vaughan Gardiner and is a meaningful pop track that will appeal to anyone who has ever been in love. According to Mia, listeners are going to like it because the message is deeper than one would expect from an ordinary pop song. “A love that is strong is hard to find and everyone needs a love story like that. This song makes you look at love differently and every word and chord speaks to the heart and gives the perfect explanation of the love that exists in my own relationship.”
The timing of the single’s release, she says, was inspired by a decision that her music should be like a passion project that never ends. “KRIMINEEL is different, it’s unique and people will be able to connect with the lyrics.”
Mia (a.k.a. Mariska Pretorius) grew up in Klerksdorp and currently resides in Potchefstroom. She comes from a very musical family and has been singing for family members since she was three.
She has been working in the music industry since 2008 after winning a singing competition at her school when she was twelve, which also gave her the opportunity to go on tour with a well-known artist.
Since then she has performed at several of the biggest music events in the country, including KKNK, Aardklop, Innibos, Ek Lief Afrikaans Cape Town and more.

“There has been many highlights in my career, like when I was invited to perform at Ek Lief Afrikaans and had the opportunity to be on ‘Bravo’ with other artists. We had the honour of ending the show with Kurt Daren,” she shares. “Every concert I share with other stars is a great privilege for me because some of us become friends and stay in touch with each other.”
Mia describes herself as a spontaneous person who always looks on the bright side of life. Good lyrics and music with emotion play a crucial role in her song choices and it is very important to her that what she sings should make sense. Experience has taught her to fight, hold on and persevere to maintain her place in the spotlight.
Nádine is credited as her biggest local role model with whom she would love to work someday. She also has great admiration for the likes of Liezel Pieters, Elandré, Smokie, Celine Dion, Wet Wet Wet, Neil Diamond and Queen. “Like me, Nádine also started singing at a young age and she also grew up with her music. She has always been true to her values and her view of life. As an artist, I would like to work with everyone in the music industry because people have different views and methods of achieving success,” she explains.
When she is not on stage, she enjoys being a teacher at her local school. She is also currently working ons a new song with Hugo Ludik and Vaughan Gardiner, which she does not want to reveal too much about.
Over the years Mia had to learn the hard way that everyone cannot be trusted and that self-confidence is essential if you want to make a success of your talent.
Like Johnny Depp, this musician believes that music can touch people’s emotions in a way that words cannot do, and that is exactly what she is trying to achieve with her own music. KRIMINEEL surpasses this personal goal and promises to impress local listeners and critics.
