Run for Rosa: 11 Marathons in 11 Days for Mental Health Reaches Finish Line

Epic endurance challenge raises awareness and support for SADAG

Demonstrating extraordinary endurance and dedication, Run for Rosa Foundation Founder and Chairman Stu Rayner successfully completed an ambitious goal: to run 11 marathons in 11 consecutive days. This inspiring endeavour, held in July, aimed to raise vital awareness and funds for the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).

Rayner began the challenge on Nelson Mandela Day, 18th July, in De Rust and triumphantly concluded it ten days later on 28th July at the historic Kimberley Hotel in Cape Town. This final day held special significance, coinciding with the birthday of Rosa Carlyle Mitchell, Rayner’s beloved cousin who tragically passed away on her 21st birthday. Rosa’s memory not only inspired the epic feat and honoured her life but served as an inspiration for the initiative’s broader objective: to highlight and address the crucial issue of mental health in our country.

The foundation’s mission to foster a community built on love, courage, and mindfulness resonated deeply throughout the event and Rayner’s determination and spirit captivated supporters and participants alike. Through each step of the 11 consecutive marathons, he carried forward Rosa’s legacy, transforming personal loss into a powerful force for awareness and change. His run was not only a physical feat but a testament to the power of purpose and community in tackling mental health challenges.

The 2024 Run for Rosa marathons also served another objective: that of promoting exercise as a liberating tool for mental health. Run for Rosa began as Rayner’s personal tribute to a loved one and has evolved into a powerful movement. His battle with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and anxiety found a positive outlet through running, and he has inspired countless others to embrace exercise as a means of healing and empowerment. “Running has been my sanctuary,” he shares. “Through this challenge, I hope to have encouraged others to find their inner strength and to see exercise as a path to mental and emotional well-being.” This philosophy underpins the foundation’s ongoing mission to empower individuals, helping them overcome obstacles, pursue their dreams, and make a positive impact within their communities.

While the challenge may have ended, its impact will continue to be felt far and wide. All proceeds will be donated by The Run for Rosa Foundation to SADAG in support of their ongoing efforts to provide mental health resources and support to individuals in need.

Cassey Chambers, Operations Director of SADAG, expressed the organisation’s heartfelt gratitude for the support, saying, “We are incredibly grateful to the Run for Rosa Foundation for their efforts. Stu’s dedication and the community’s support are invaluable in raising both funds and awareness for mental health issues. Initiatives like these are vital in promoting mental wellness and providing much-needed resources.”
