witty sHosted by the uproarious 2023 Comedian of the Year, Robby Collins, the 2024 Savanna Newcomer Showcase took place in Sandton, bringing together comedy enthusiasts for an unforgettable night of laughter.
In collaboration with Savanna Premium Cider and One-eyed Jack, the event marked the kickoff to the 11th Annual Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards. Attendees were treated to a series of lead-up events building anticipation for the grand awards night in April.
The Newcomer Showcase, founded in 2013, showcased 20 talented comedians flown in from across the country. These rising stars, including Mzonke Maloney, Wesley Paulse, and Emile Alexander, had their moment on stage to impress industry professionals, casting agents, and comedy promoters.
The fast-paced, two-hour show, was a laughter-filled afternoon. Comedians and the audience alike enjoyed the spotlight on the best-emerging talent in the comedy circuit.
Kayla Hendricks, Senior Brand Manager of Savanna Premium Cider, expressed excitement about supporting local talent. “The Savanna Newcomers Showcase is a highlight in the comedy calendar, allowing the audience to witness the next big names before the prestigious Savanna Comics Choice Comedy Awards.”
The Theatre on the Square in Sandton set the stage for the showcase on Sunday, January 21, 2024. The complimentary Savanna at 4:00 PM kicked off the event, creating a lively atmosphere before the show started at 5:00 PM.
Following the two-hour laughter extravaganza, guests had the chance to mingle with the comedians, enjoy drinks, and dance to the tunes of a DJ.
Tickets at R150 were in high demand, emphasizing the success and popularity of the event. All proceeds from ticket sales will contribute to an incubator workshop, supporting the growth of emerging comedic talent in South Africa.
The newcomers are also provided with a Newcomer Incubator Workshop following the showcase with guest speakers including the likes of Chris Forrest, Dillon Khan, Kate Goliath, and Takunda Bimba. During this session they will discuss various topics such as: How to find your method in comedy, working with TV, creating and managing your brand in comedy to name but a few.
