WONDERFUL things can be made out of waste, and The Park Boulevard Centre is calling for primary school learners from Grade 1 – 7 to enter their Recycling competition, where one gets to repurpose items from recycled materials.

This competition focuses on the 3R’s of the waste hierarchy’ – recycle, repurpose & reuse – to show how learners can give waste a new lease on life.

Learners are invited to create either 2D or 3D reproductions, which can be individual and unique, and made entirely of used or recycled materials. This is such a great opportunity for schools to teach the children more about recycling and reducing waste while having fun. The aim is to repurpose from one form of use, to another.

Your inspiration could come from recycling plastic bags and turn them into a weaved handbag (when scrunched); or turn a 2L cool drink bottle into a pot plant holder or bird feeder.

Be sure to get your entries in before Friday, May 24th. Not only will The Park Boulevard Centre display your creations in Etchings Gallery, but you also stand to win R1 500 cash and R5 000 for your school.

Remember, the focus is on ensuring that your recycled or repurposed item can be reused. Basic judging criteria will be on the effective use of recycled or repurposed materials and creativity. This shouldn’t stop you from having fun while coming up with innovative, creative ideas, showcasing your final product.
