[Johannesburg, South Africa – 26 November, 2024] – Lenovo South Africa has collaborated with celebrated South African personality Somizi Mhlongo to empower emerging South African designers through their “Be the Creator” initiative. Lenovo’s “Be the Creator” initiative is designed to support and empower creators and designers by providing them with the tools and resources they need to bring their ideas to life. As part of a broader programme aimed at fostering creativity and innovation Lenovo and Somizi provided guidance and mentorship to a group of fashion students in order to develop a fashion showcase which blends fashion and technology.

In South Africa, the intersection of fashion and technology is creating exciting opportunities for fashion students. With many fashion institutions integrating digital tools and sustainable practices into their curriculum, this fusion of fashion and technology not only enhances the creative process but also equips students with the skills needed to thrive in a competitive market.

Somizi who founded SOMPIRE KIDS: “Brave Enough To Be Yoself”, is encouraging positivity and confidence in children while they boldly step up in the most fashion forward version of themselves whilst also advocating for young fashion talent in the region.

With this in mind Lenovo and Somizi Mhlongo launched the initiative to discover and empower local home-grown fashion talent. “Be the Creator” saw students come together and create a one of kind fashion show which was held at the Villioti Fashion institute to showcase their concepts and designs which were influenced by the blend of fashion and technology. The showcase was also judged by a panel of experts which included Mr. Spero Villioti himself.

Wayne Holt, Lenovo’s Southern Africa Consumer Category Manager said “Lenovo’s ‘Be the Creator’ initiative is an important pillar in our commitment to empowering the next generation of designers. By blending fashion and technology, we are not only fostering creativity but also driving innovation in sustainable practices. This platform celebrates the incredible potential that arises when cutting-edge technology meets artistic vision. Additionally, our partnerships with educational institutions and industry leaders such as Somizi ensure that creators receive the mentorship and resources they need to succeed. We believe that by supporting these talented individuals, we can inspire a new wave of innovation and creativity in the fashion industry.”

Somizi Mhlongo, added “Creativity is the heartbeat of South Africa, and it’s incredible to see brands like Lenovo investing in the future of our creative industries and in local talent. The ‘Be the Creator’ initiative is a suitable launchpad for young visionaries to share their artistry with the world. I’m proud to be part of a creative movement that uplifts and inspires.”
