South Africa’s most promising indie act Bye Beneco drops new single Devl Eyes and moves to Berlin

Must read

South African dream pop sensation Bye Beneco are back with their new synth-pop dance track Devl Eyes through Apple’s Platoon. Devl Eyes is the newest fruit from Bye Beneco’s upcoming EP that will be released in the beginning of 2022.

About the song

The menacing sensation of pop-synth is beautifully underpinned in Devl Eyes by the optimistic, escapist nature of the disco elements in the piece. This very duality is the foundation of what Devil Eyes is selling. Birthed in a confined space during South Africa’s first lockdown, the song reflects the impulses Lenny-Dee wrestled with during this oddly serene period spent strictly indoors. Surfacing urges to be ‘bad’ momentarily in order to experience a little relief, and maybe even some reckless fun, in a world where our existence feels tracked and monitored, is the centrepiece of the song. Once we reach the bridge, a spiralling synth hints  to a loss of control as Devl Eyes “worms its way inside of me”.

The Chorus is led by an underlying grumbling arpeggiator synth, oscillating, swinging us in and out of reality and a dreamworld. “The Devil Eyes, I clearly see them”; this steady repetition is almost an hypnosis. In the verse following – “Do you feel yourself as you wrap around my finger, I’ll hold you tight.. I’ll try be tender” – Lenny-Dee takes the control back.
