Vulnerability is the melodic new single by Thabo Krouwkam. Weaving English and Isixhosa together, it’s the final single off his EP entitled Vulnerabilities.
What was the inspiration for the single?
“This song is one of my most personal songs and it speaks directly to what I am processing through my music in this phase of my life. The concept of vulnerability as an expression of courage really resonates with me and I wanted to communicate the need to connect to those around me through this song.
Uyazi ndiyindoda? Ndiyindoda enemizwa. In the chorus I sing these Xhosa words that mean: “You know I’m a man, I’m a man of feelings”. This was inspired by my intention to further highlight the way our society currently discourages men to feel their feelings. I believe this notion has caused a lot of harm and I hope to inspire more men to be vulnerable with their emotions.
Raised in the Western Cape, Thabo found much of his creative inspiration at home:
“With an artist mother and father that is a great patron of the arts, my home was always full of colour and new sounds. I grew up in Worcester and went to a multicultural school. This influenced my music a great deal. My extended family comes from the Eastern Cape, so the Wild Coast has been a place to escape to for me my whole life. I have a deep love for the landscapes of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape and am constantly inspired and fascinated by the history and knowledge held in these spaces.
