One word best describes the MTV Africa Music Awards 2016 Nominations Event at the Constitution Hill, Braamfontein last night – Spectacular!
As a matter of fact, last night’s nomination party was beyond spectacular as the brightest stars in the South African music Industry shone together in a titillating atmosphere. You could literally feel the excitement in the air last night that the fifth edition of the MTV Africa Music Awards was upon us. The excitement filtered to the brightly lit stage as stars like Khuli Chana, Riky Rick Mi Casa, Nathi, Shekinah, Lizha James, DJs PH, Major League DJz, Tha Duchaz, Prince Kaybee and DJ Snypes treated the audience to electrifying performances.
MTV Base VJ Sandile Ntshingila and beautiful actress, Nomzamo Mbatha were the hosts of the evening. The Tell Me Sweet Something star was the centre of attention as she wore a dress that left many jaws hanging. Apart from Nomzamo’s outfit, the news that Comedy star Trevor Noah will be the host of the main event put a smile on so many faces across the open-air venue.
Another highlight of the party was the revelation of the nominees for the awards. Wizkid was nominated three times for Best Male, Best Collaboration and Personality of the Year categories. AKA (South Africa), Cassper Nyovest (South Africa) and Sauti Sol (Kenya) managed two nominations while the Best Hip Hop category saw MAMA nominations for Emtee and Riky Rick of South Africa, Nigeria’s Olamide and Ycee, and Kiff No Beat (Ivory Coast). Ghana’s R2bees face off against Kenya’s Sauti Sol, South Africa’s Mi Casa, Navy Kenzo from Tanzania and Togolese duo, Toofan were nominated for The Best Group category.
In lifestyle category Personality of the Year, Pearl Thusi was nominated alongside soccer player Pierre Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon), middle distance runner and Olympic gold medallist Caster Semenya. Blogger Linda Ikeji (Nigeria) and musician Wizkid (Nigeria) who were involved in a bitter feud a few months ago, ironically find themselves in the same category for Personality of the Year.
The second round of nominations, comprising 7 additional award categories, including Artist of the Year, Best Female, Listener’s Choice, Best Breakthrough, Best Francophone, Song of the Year in partnership with Google, and Video of the Year, will be revealed at the Hard Rock Café, Lagos, Nigeria during Road to MAMA – Lagos 2016 (2 October 2016). No nominations will be revealed for the MTV Base Reimagined award, and MAMA Legend.
