The Story Café Webinar – bringing hope to children facing life’s hardships
“Sometimes as carers, parents, therapists or teachers we feel at a loss as how to help contain some of the complex emotions our children feel in response to traumatic events. The Story Café Webinar provides tools to support a process of holding for these children and ourselves. Using story to do this is as old as time itself, this is not new, this is about remembering how to do it!”. Says Tamara Gordon-Roberts.
Tammy is a registered Drama therapist, facilitator and educator with the Health Professions Council of South Africa who will be hosting this webinar.
This free and valuable webinar is brought to you by U matter a project of Smile Foundation, in collaboration with Avela Foundation.
With a key focus on children, The Story Café Webinar is an online workshop created to empower families with the tools needed to endure hardships and help children make the brave journey ahead.
By using story through gentle conversation style engagement to help contain, explore and frame our difficult life experiences, this webinar will be covering these themes and relate them to hardships and life events where children need to be brave:
The webinar encompasses all these aspects:
- The range of human emotions and tangible examples of these.
- The crucial role of the parent/caregiver in building healthy and honest narratives.
- The exploration of storying as a process of making, creating and sharing story.
- Why we use stories, the usefulness of them and practical examples of how to apply them better.
- The use of story as an active process between child and storyteller/facilitator.
- How story and its colourful metaphors can contain, explore and frame a child’s experiences by holding a safe narrative for their life.
- Tangible examples of stories that help embrace overwhelming feelings.
- The sharing of useful and current examples and resources.
- Open question and answer sessions.
Through showing the important role we can play as adults in helping young children to contain extraordinary feelings, The Story Café Webinar is designed to empower young people and their families, who are going through the repercussions of traumatic life events. Through the distance of story, it will show how to manage difficult emotions around such hardships.
