The Gauteng traffic police said on Sunday that their plans were underway to appeal EFF leader Julius Malema’s acquittal on a reckless driving charge.

“We have approached the [National Prosecuting Authority]. We have started the move.”

On Friday, the Vanderbijilpark Magistrate’s Court acquitted Malema of reckless driving.

The Economic Freedom Fighters leader had been accused of allegedly driving his BMW at a speed of 215km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 freeway in the Vaal area on the night of December 19.

However, the court ruled that the State could not prove the device used to record Malema’s speed was in good working order.

Shortly after the ruling, Sibasa released a media statement insisting that the Gauteng traffic police had a “watertight case” against Malema.[/full]
