eWaste has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, with millions of tons of discarded electronic devices improperly disposed of each year. Recognising the need to address this issue in a unique and engaging way, the Absa Gallery has partnered with YMT (You Made This), an art-based initiative centred on raising public awareness and engagement around the issues of electronic waste (eWaste).
The YMT initiative, which is sponsored by Xperien, promotes the proper disposal of eWaste, the fastest-growing waste source through art collaborations, encouraging a circular economy of refurbished electronics and showcasing the talented artists who specialise in transforming e-waste into awe-inspiring installations. YMT was inspired by the growing impact of electronic waste on our environment and the lack of knowledge that exists when it comes to disposable items. The lack of recycling weighs heavily on the global electronic industry and as devices become more numerous, smaller, and more complex, the issue escalates.
The “Drowning Planet” exhibition currently on at Absa Towers North creates awareness of this issue and provides key insights into the importance of responsible eWaste disposal, recycling options, and the potential environmental and health impacts of the improper handling thereof. This partnership has resulted in a series of remarkable art pieces that showcase the beauty and transformative power of recycling, with the installations are not only visually captivating but also serve as potent reminders of the consequences of our throwaway culture. By giving a second life to discarded electronic components, these artworks challenge our perception of waste and encourage us to reconsider our consumption patterns.
Some of the notable art installations, created by Francois Knoetze and David Braithwaite, are constructed entirely from salvaged circuit boards and electronic components. Other pieces include, a sculpture made from discarded computer monitors, keyboards, and other eWaste materials, as well as a large-scale interactive art installation constructed from recycled cables, wires, and other electronic components.
Through these inspiring art installations, Absa and YMT aim to spark conversations, engage the public, and catalyse positive change in e-waste management practices. By combining creativity and environmental awareness, the organisations hope to encourage individuals and businesses alike to adopt responsible e-waste disposal methods, embrace recycling, and work towards a more sustainable future.
“Art and eWaste hold tremendous significance in our world today. Art has the power to transcend barriers, evoke emotions, and spark dialogue. By using eWaste as a medium for artistic expression, we not only draw attention to the global crisis of electronic waste but also highlight the transformative potential of recycling and responsible consumption. Through art, we inspire individuals to rethink their relationship with waste, ignite conversations about sustainability, and ultimately pave the way for a more environmentally conscious future,” says Dr Paul Bayliss Senior Specialist, Absa Art and Museum Curator.
Founding Director of YMT, Dominic Humphry further adds, “eWaste partnerships have a profound impact on an artist’s life, offering them a unique avenue for creative expression while addressing a pressing global issue. The integration of eWaste into their artistic practice helps to deepen their understanding of environmental sustainability. By repurposing eWaste, artists contribute to a circular economy, creating art that serves as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility towards responsible consumption and waste management.”
At “Drowning Planet,” visitors are invited to engage with the artworks and reflect on their own consumption habits, and encouraged to share their experience on social media, using the hashtag #DrowningPlanet, to further raise awareness about the need for a more sustainable and responsible approach to electronics. Through this partnership Absa has proven that they are committed to actively participating in initiatives that contribute to making the world a better place. As they continue to leverage resources, expertise, and partnerships to drive positive change, foster sustainable solutions, and create a brighter future for all.
