For those venturing into the realm of waxing for the very first time, they are greeted with an adventure brimming with anticipation and the allure of the unknown. Upon entering the wax bar, a blend of nerves and curiosity takes over, leaving one uncertain of what lies ahead. The scent of WAXIT’s exclusive hypoallergenic wax fills the air, while the sight of impeccably clean treatment rooms evokes a sense of comfort and intrigue. Despite the ultimate goal of achieving smooth, hair-free skin, an array of lingering questions may still remain in ones mind: Will there be pain? Should I have shaves beforehand? Can I go to the gym afterwards?

Michelle Bittkau, Marketing Manager of WAXIT,shares 3 key pieces of key advice that everyone should know before and after their first wax, so that you can step into your next waxing appointment with confidence.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOUR FIRST WAX:

Hygiene Tip 1: A bath or shower before treatment is recommended to reduce oil or residue on the skin that could potentially block pores.

Why WAXIT believes this is this important: Preparing your skin for a wax will ensure that you have a smooth experience with us. Waxing removes hair from the follicles so it is important to prepare the skin to make sure that your pores aren’t blocked with oil or dirt when we wax your skin.

Hygiene Tip 2: Gently exfoliate beforehand to remove dead skin cells that surround the hair follicles.

Why is this important: We suggest that you exfoliate your skin approximately 24 hours before your wax. Exfoliating helps loosen existing ingrown hairs and prepares your skin to improve your waxing results.

Hygiene Tip 3: Allow for hair to grow at least a half a centimetre, or the length of a grain of rice.

Why WAXIT believes this is this important:  Your hair needs to be a specific length to ensure that all of your hairs  come out together. If your hair is too short, hairs may not come out with the wax or they may break leaving you with an uneven wax. It can also make your wax more uncomfortable. As you start to get into a waxing routine, your hairs will start to grow at the same rate and you will be left with the smoothest results. Good to add in here that shaving in-between waxes will make a wax more painful and can cause more ingrown hairs.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW AFTER YOUR FIRST WAX:

Hygiene Tip 1: Steer clear of exposure to heat or anything that will make you sweat (ie. saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools, and intense exercise) for at least 6-12 hours after your wax as this can cause severe reactions and irritations.

Why WAXIT believes this is this important:  After a wax the skin is irritated and sensitive, we have just pulled out hairs leaving your pores exposed to their environments. By exposing your skin to sweat, exercising and even a hot shower, you will irritate your skin which could create ingrown hairs or even folliculitis.

Hygiene Tip 2: Avoid exfoliating or applying any deodorants or creams to freshly waxed skin for 24 hours after a wax.

Why WAXIT believes this is this important: The pores of your skin are open after a wax and you need to keep the areas as clean as possible for 24 hours. Creams, oils, perfumes and deodorants can irritate your skin and cause ingrown hairs, while exfoliating the skin so soon after a wax, will irritate your already sensitive skin and cause a reaction.

Hygiene Tip 3: Don’t wear tight fitting trousers or underwear after a wax.

Why WAXIT believes this is this important:  It is important to give your skin space to breathe after a wax  and loose fitting clothes will help with this. Your skin is very sensitive after a wax and the pores are open so you need to ensure that any clothing that is near your freshly waxed area is clean and loose.
