We The People Will Keep The Flame Alive

Make the table bigger and you could be seated at the Nando’s in Washington DC

[Johannesburg, April 2022] The South African Constitution enshrines the rights of the South African people and sparks the fire of our democracy. Notably, its preamble holds important words, stating: “We, the people of South Africa, believe that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, united in our diversity.”

As we celebrate 25 years since our constitutional rights became effective, Nando’s is inviting South Africans to make their tables bigger by exploring tables far from them and meeting citizens outside their comfort zones and regular haunts.

Justine Cullinan, General Manager Marketing – Brand Strategy and Communication at Nando’s, explains that celebrating South Africa’s diversity is instrumental to the progression of the country, and it is for this reason that Nando’s has launched the Make The Table Bigger campaign.

“We live in a wonderfully diverse country, but many of us stick to our routines of visiting the same places and seeing the same people. This year, in honour of our Constitution’s 25th Anniversary, we wanted to offer South Africans a reason to truly embody the unity of our diversity, push people out of their comfort zones and incentivise them to visit a table far from where they usually eat.”

The campaign calls on all South Africans to come together and be the initiators of togetherness. Generations before them fought for democracy, and now the youth can keep that flame burning for the country’s next generation.

Being diverse in your Nando’s restaurant of choice could land two lucky diners and their partners a trip abroad. All you need to do is collect stamps in your Nando’s Passports – found on the Nando’s app – to stand a chance to climb the pecking order and stamp your tickets for the experience of a lifetime, exploring the different area codes and experience the Nando’s flame in the capital of the United States of America.

Much like the preamble of the South African Constitution, the United States Constitution begins with We, The People showing that by working together, we can light the fire of democracy and continue enjoying our diversity for generations to come.

“We want people to jump many borders, both geographically and mentally, to collect as many passport stamps as they can from as many Nando’s as they can visit so that we can send a lucky winner all the way to Nando’s in Washington DC (which is a table VERY FAR away). At Nando’s, we believe that meeting people where they’re at, over a meal of their choice, is the best way to get to know someone different from you” concludes Cullinan.
