Yesterday evening, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa selected his team of cabinet ministers. Prominent among them were Nhlanhla Nene, Malusi Gigaba and Pravin Gordhan, all served as Finance Ministers under the Zuma administration.

Nhlanhla Nene, who was fired by Zuma, makes a comeback as the new Finance Minister, while Malusi Gigaba goes back to the Department of Home Affairs.

“From the onset I knew that the President had made up his mind and it would not change‚” Nene told TimesLIVE.

“I tried to resist a little‚ but I knew. He had made up his mind‚” he added.

Pravin Gordhan also returns, this time replacing Lynne Brown as the Public Enterprises Minister.

In a brief statement, President Ramaphosa said,

These changes are intended to ensure that national government is better equipped to implement the mandate of this administration and specifically the tasks identified in the State of the Nation Address.”

In making these changes, I have been conscious of the need to balance continuity and stability with the need for renewal, economic recovery and accelerated transformation.

As indicated in the State of the Nation Address, we have begun a review of the configuration, size and number of national ministries and departments. We will retain the existing ministries and departments until that review process is completed.
